Worth a Million Words

I love this picture:

Because sometimes, you will split up with your husband and get the cat you always wanted but couldn’t have, because he’s severely allergic. And then, when he comes to see your rabbit (NOT A EUPHEMISM OF ANY KIND), he will hang out with the cat anyway. Wearing a mask.

Not only will Nito take any pettings he can get, but Hugh was happy to see him.

Oh, the things in life that no one makes a Hallmark card for.

Teej, Hugh is actually one of the smallest breeds! I used to think of him as giant when I first got him, but since I got involved with the rabbit community, I have met some VERY BIG BUNNIES. Who lay around all relaxed and lazy, like big dogs. I think my favorite even-bigger breed is the Chinchilla rabbit or the Rex. They are cool dudes.

  4. I wish I had something profound or even relevant to say, but…

    MOAR HUGH FOTOS PLZ.

The cat boyfriend would also be an acceptable contribution to the fuzzy quota.

I’ve been wondering… what are Hugh’s living arrangements? Is he in a cage most of the time and heavily supervised when he’s out? Or does he roam free? Is he litter trained? I’ve wanted a pet bunny for the longest time, but I’m still unclear on all the particulars.

Brenna, Hugh lives in a HUGE cage that I built by hand (this sounds difficult, but all you need are some grids, a bunch of zip ties, and a few other minor items). He and the cat aren’t enemies, but Hugh seems to find Nito’s advances sort of irritating, so Nito hangs out in the bathroom for a while every day while Hugh hops around.

Hugh is not overly destructive outside of his cage, but that’s because I don’t let him get bored in the house. If he starts acting bored and stirring up trouble, it’s time to go home. Also, if he decides the house belongs to him, he might leave a territorial poop here and there, which is undesirable for obvious reasons!

I also have a very bunnyproofed house in terms of cords to chew. So I just have to unplug like one surge protector and he can’t really hurt himself on cords. I do supervise, but not all that aggressively.

So his gigantic cage is his home base, with about a half hour of exercise a day (sometimes longer, if I’m cleaning, since Nito gets underfoot and has to go in the bathroom anyway).

As for litter training, you don’t really littertrain a rabbit, as they are stubborn and you are WAY better off just letting them lead. If you put them in an area and keep them there, they will pick a corner and pee in it. Put the litterbox there. You’re done. Hugh has never had an accident. Now that he’s used to using his box, I can move it, or we can go somewhere entirely new, and he will still use it.

There are VERY WRONG ways to set up a rabbit that will lead to a lot of messiness, and much easier ways. For instance, bunnies eat hay, which is messy; I hang it over the litterbox, so the mess just drops into the litterbox. Et cetera, et cetera.

The cage design incorporates pretty much everything I’ve learned. For instance, communication is important so bunnies aren’t startled, so we have a Good Door and a Bad Door. When I open the Good Door, Hugh comes running to be petted and loved on. When I open the Bad Door, he hides! Which can be a pain in the ass, but it’s better that he knows what to expect.

And then there are the different breeds, etc, etc … it goes on and on!

You definitely want to talk to someone who knows what they’re doing when setting up a bunny, or you’ll waste a lot of time and money trying to find something that works while the bunny runs circles around you and destroys your life. Heh.

Your bedroom looks delicious—those colours are glorious.

Also, I thought I should tell you…your friend Danger inspired me to write a fake autobiography for an assignment in school. The only thing I used was the idea of a girl named Danger, so I hope that isn’t plagiarism or anything. Anyway, I just submitted it yesterday and if I get an A on it I’m planning on posting it on my blog. So I’ll let you know.

Not that you care. But just in case you do.

Photos of your apartment always make me horribly miss my old studio apartment — the tiny room, the tinier kitchenette, the bed and dresser and nothing-else of it all. Most of all I miss how it was all mine, and everything I needed was contained in a 10×10 space of my own. Alas, poor studio! I hardly knew ye.

Sara: Dude, I LOVE my apartment, so I hear you! It’s just that room, a little nook to write in, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Oh, and a TON of closet space, amazingly enough. I don’t even really use it all.

I’m going to be moving back to my hometown for a little while (like six months) and even though rent is way cheaper there, I find myself downright dismayed at how huge all of the apartments are. Two bedrooms? What on EARTH am I going to do with two bedrooms? I don’t even need ONE bedroom!

I’m really going to miss this apartment. It’s so delicious, full of obsolete keyholes and subway tile and a soaking tub.

Hilarious that chinchilla rabbits are big, given that their namesakes are so wee. I’m imagining that they’re unbearably soft, though, seeing as how they’d be combining rabbit *and* chinchilla.

And those pictures are ADORABLE. Pet visitation always got some of my former coworkers sniggering, but it’s tremendously important when there’s a breakup or divorce. Jeff is seriously good people for braving the cat dander, though!

Avitable: It used to be hard sometimes, in various ways, but at this point it’s pretty routine. Jeff has a great sense of humor, and we’ve always had a lot of fun joking around. It was very pleasing to realize we could still do that. We have like a million inside jokes built up over, oh, I don’t know, a DECADE, and I would have really missed them.

I will say that being friends with your ex requires you to get over a pretty big emotional hump, and everyone has to be on board and recognize it as important, because for a while, it feels REALLY counterintuitive. But once it mellowed out, I was really glad I had made the effort. Jeff and I still cheer each other on in life, and I think we could always use that support from someone who has known us forever.
